Sustainability

We believe that farms should be run on sustainable lines in order to minimise the negative impact of farming on the environment and wherever possible improve habitats for wildlife. That is why, at Eldersfield, we actively work and farm to improve biodiversity to increase the number of wild species that live on our farms.

Wherever possible, our animals are fed on produce grown by us and all food is traceable to source. We do not use or feed genetically modified products or products from unsustainable sources. We believe that this not only guarantees produce of the highest quality and safety, but also allows us to live side by side with nature.

Our cattle graze upon open pastures throughout the summer. They remain outside until such time as the weather deteriorates to the extent that moving them inside is beneficial for their health and welfare. If the weather improves, advantage is taken of this opportunity to graze outside. In winter they are fed mainly on hay and silage grown in our meadows, supplemented with our own crops (wheat, barley, oats, beans, sunflowers and apple pumice) to give them a balanced diet.

We aim to run an integrated farm that is ecologically sound; bees that produce our honey pollinate our apples and pears. Once the apples and pears have been squeezed for juice, cider and perry, they are fed to the cattle. Manure from the cattle is spread back onto the land to fertilise arable crops. The arable crops support food for the cattle. As we are not reliant upon external sources, this minimises the need for transport, which has a beneficial impact on the environment. Furthermore it minimises waste.
